(This course is validated by the University of Brighton and delivered by Northbrook College)
The courses consist of 12* modules delivered over two years. Initially, students start with a general introduction to all areas of theatre production and planning. Then, in the spring term, they follow their chosen Foundation Degree and apply skills practically on productions. The first year will see students take supportive roles on shows and work on approximately 10-15 productions, both in the Northbrook Theatre and Brighton venues. Progressing to the 2nd year, students will then take senior production and design positions. Ultimately, they will lead a team and facilitate the requirements of assorted events and productions, working within their own specialised degree area and also alongside those students following other production and performance degrees.
Students will gain knowledge in lighting and sound design across our studio and theatre spaces. Working on lighting desks, students will programme and operate conventional and moving lights using analogue and digital lighting boards. Techniques covered include rigging, focusing, colour theory and lighting design. Students will learn how to construct cue sheets, hanging plots, gel calls and focus charts. Students will also cover truss and motor work. Our Theatre was completely re-equipped in 2015. Students will produce sound schematics, set up a full PA system and record and edit sound effects using Q-Lab. All work is carried out in line with current Health & Safety legislation.Study hours are split between approximately one third scheduled learning (eg lectures, tutorials, practical classes and workshops) and two thirds guided independent study, which may include 3 or more weeks' work experience.
