Programme Leader, Design & Technical Theatre Arts: Nicola Stammers
Middlesex has a long tradition of innovation in the teaching of theatre as a dynamic and collective art, with a reputation for producing creative, thoughtful graduates who directly shape the theatre industry. BA Theatre Arts (Design and Technical Theatre) enables you to develop skills and approaches to scenographic, visual, aural and technical design for theatre, integrating influences from fine art and performance art and emphasising contemporary methodologies and collaborative interrogation.
We strive to break down the traditional divisions between the performance, design and technical elements of theatre, promoting highly innovative and collaborative approaches to theatre-making. Integrating practice and theory, the course enables you to explore design and technical theatre in thought and action, in a challenging environment with the support of passionate and active academic and technical staff, and cutting-edge technical facilities. Our three theatres are equipped with state of the art LED lighting and we encourage students to pursue new and emerging technologies in video mapping and interactive performance. Set and costume designers can take advantage of our large and extensive props and costume stores. Your skills are tested in practice through all 3 years of the degree, and we stage between 70-90 unique productions in each academic year.
As a result of this approach, our students graduate with skills that give them a real advantage in the theatre industries, and many of our undergraduates are already working professionally by the end of their studies.
