Theatre, film and television are at the heart of the creative industries globally and make a significant contribution to the UK economy. This course offers you the opportunity to study the stage and screen sectors of these creative industries as commercial and artistic enterprises. It provides a comprehensive understanding of critical approaches to theatre, film and television, with an emphasis on the aesthetic and cultural analysis of stage and screen fiction; the creation of new expressive forms; and their role in shaping social, cultural and psychological life. As a student on this course you will develop an informed understanding of the place of theatre and film in contemporary society, and have the opportunity to develop your own forms of creative, communicative and expressive practice. Your critical understanding of the art, craft and practice of narrative drama in theatre, film and television will enable you to meet the challenges of employment in a society in which the creative industries play a central role.
The first year of study provides a broad understanding of how theatre, film and television work as creative industries, introduces you to the study of stage and screen narrative and performance, and gives you the opportunity to produce your own forms of media production. The second year examines questions of genre and creativity alongside the theory and practice of stage performance. In year three and four you study key periods, movements and practitioners in stage and screen drama alongside optional modules based on staff research expertise in areas such as adaptation, comedy, playwriting, and contemporary Hollywood cinema. You will also acquire skills in stage and screen production, as well as skills in academic research, project management, teamwork, and communication, all of which will enable you to develop careers in a related range of professions.
