We stress the importance of a committed, focused and interrogative approach to all aspects of making and performing. Our students learn the value of working in teams and how to problem solve creatively. Through engagement with our creative partners regionally and internationally, we strive to equip our students to work skillfully and effectively in a variety of different contexts and professional settings.
The department has strong links with the industry and our theatre visits programme which runs in conjunction with Peninsula Arts has played host to some of Britain's major theatre and dance artists.
The theatre directors Yukio Ninagawa and Eugenio Barba hold honorary doctorates from the Plymouth University, as does the renowned choreographer Russell Maliphant and the influential performance artist Marina Abramović. Our honorary doctors speak about and perform their work as part of the regular visits they make to Plymouth University. Both Russell Maliphant and Wendy Houston have used our theatre to create and preview work prior to London premiers.
Jordi Cortés and Kirstie Simson have performed and taught professional development workshops, which some of our third year and post-graduate students have taken part in.
Our students present their own, and professionally directed work across the three years both in studio settings, in site-specific work and on the main stage of our new 7 million pound fully accessible theatre ‘The House'.
