A practical, hands-on degree providing an interesting balance of theory and practice. We encourage you to look beyond the confines of the traditional theatre space and to enjoy the challenges of creating work in urban and rural spaces, community centres, schools and through digital media and interactive technology - the virtual and imagined.
The course guides you through the skills you need to become a practitioner and scholar, gradually learning how to plan, execute and evaluate your own projects. All the Drama and Theatre Studies lecturers at Chester continue to practise either as professional performers in a variety of contexts, or as scholars and researchers. Some do both!
We encourage autonomous learning that is reflected not only in the delivery of modules but also in assessment and attendance guidelines at all levels of study, professionalism is a key factor throughout this process. A signature element of the course is the opportunity to tailor your studies to your interests.
Our well-equipped studios provide the ideal base from which to learn and develop your craft. We also provide you with the opportunities to participate in theatre visits and workshops led by professional artists/companies and field trips within the UK and abroad.
The course focuses on Physical Theatre, and uses a mixture of text based and non-text based practice. Current unique aspects of Physical Theatre studied on the course include Commedia dell'Arte (an Italian Renaissance form of street performance), and French approaches to clowning and comedy - where you could earn the smallest mask in the theatre: the red nose.
You will be taught by scholars/practitioners and visiting artists all of whom share a passion for the discipline. The wealth of experience from teaching staff allows you to benefit from specific industry guest speakers either performing and/or providing workshops to enhance your skills, experience and networking opportunities.
