Students following the degree in Drama and Theatre Arts at The University of Birmingham take a variety of modules, many of which integrate theory and practice. The first year of study takes the form of a ‘foundation' year in which key skills are learnt in the context of textual analysis, theatre history, performance theory and critique, and in practical areas such as improvisation, movement, voice and for single honours students only; stage management, costume, lighting and sound. Students participate in production work as members of a team crewing each production either in stage management, costume, lighting or sound.
Our department of Drama and Theatre Arts is a leader in the integrated academic and practical study of Drama, Performance and Theatre Arts, currently ranked 1st in all three major league tables: Guardian University Guide 2017, Complete University Guide 2017, and the Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide 2016.
